Manyano Media presents the 2022 Black Girl Live Fellowship showcase.

The fellowship produces and commissions experimental, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary stories made by black and queer women storytellers.

This year's fellows, multidisciplinary artists Lukhanyiso Skosana and Nasfa Ncanywa, will present their works in progress.

In her showcase, Nasfa Ncanywa will explore the consequences of absent black domestic workers and the relationship between their absence and what is fractured/missed in the lives of their children while they are working. The play reflects on the state of black personhoods in post-apartheid and the effects of a colonial past, looking specifically at the present realties and future of the black child.

Lukhanyiso Skosana presents a story of one who has been met by their grave countless times, kicking and screaming in lamentation. The work takes us through how this mutilated body has been laid to rest, as they peacefully mourn the being they once were, simultaneously resurrecting their unwanted incarnation; like a ghostly presence constantly haunting their present self, in their continuous future…

The works will be showcased as a double bill, one show starting at 19:30 and the second at 20:30 on both nights.

Artist Biographies

Lukhanyiso Skosana, an actress, performance artist, vocalist, composer and theatre-maker born and bred eGqebrha in the Eastern Cape. Lukhanyiso is an ancestral being, governed by the physical and metaphysical realm. Their work is centered around the body as a site generating images and narratives for and through performance. The use of music sediments and ephemerality is a governing body in their personhood and artistic practice.

Nasfa Ncanywa, an interdisciplinary artist working in film, theatre and visual art.  Her work investigates the state of black personhoods in a post-apartheid society and the effects of a colonial past, looking specifically at the future of black children in the Township, rural areas, and the CBD.

The Black Girl Live Fellowship is supported by Artistic Director and Business Mentor, Koleka Putuma; Storytelling Mentor, Nwabisa Plaatjie; and Project Manager and Business Mentor, Robyn-Lee Pretorius.

The Black Girl Live Fellowship is presented by Manyano Media, in partnership with the National Arts Council and Africa No Filter.
