A ragtag gang of Cape Town’s messiest misfits have been gathering in secret (okay, in the Minor Hall at Theatre Arts) every week for two months, trying to ‘uncover their inner clown’. With some assistance from improv maestro Pags Bantwana, and a masterclass on mask with Lecoq-trained Aldo Brincat, they are armed with the confidence of a theatre graduate who just finished a 2-week course at Gaulier.
Are they ready? Absolutely not. But that’s never stopped a clown before! Armed with nothing but red noses, reckless enthusiasm, and the wobbly belief that the only rule is: no rules.
Will it work? Who knows. Will it be fun? Absolutely.
Come witness the madness—before they start charging West End prices!
After visiting the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the last 2 years, Sophie Joans had a dream: to make clowning as popular in South Africa as it is “up North”.
This unique style of comedy embraces the art of failure, and after hosting their first workshop in Dec 2024, Clown Town has grown into CPT’s unofficial weekly clown school, with over 40 members in their ever-growing whatsapp group.
Guided by the principle “the clown falls down so that we don’t have to”, and inspired by shows like STAMPTOWN, we bring you our first ever offering of all the ways we’ve learnt to fall, fail and create a royal f**k up in the last few weeks.
We have no idea if it will work. But we’re gonna be laughing. So whether you want to get over your clown phobia, or if you just wanna watch 10 people bump into each other for an hour, this is the show for you.
(No clowns will be wearing full make-up. Some might be wearing red noses.)
