YCR 2025

The Young Choreographers Residency is an initiative is to invest in and elevate emerging creatives who want to not only put their work on stages but who want to use their craft and artistry to uplift and reimagine the way we approach creation. This residency programme is to initiate job creation and provide a platform for the next generation of future choreographers. We have selected a group of 6 young creatives who will present their work alongside 5 baba yaya company dancers. We will be providing these artists with rehearsal space, morning classes with the baba yaya dance company, workshops on choreographic techniques and tools, baba yaya merchandise as well as financial assistance for transport and food. The leading choreographer of YCR 2025 will join the baba yaya creative team for our end of year production YASUKE

BABA YAYA

Liberating Creative Excellence

BABA YAYA is a South African Dance Company dedicated to Job Creation, High Performance Training, Creative Development and Grass Roots Initiatives within the dance sector. Our primary focus is providing these opportunities to talented youth from under resourced communities. Our holistic approach to well-being and creative diversity leverages the arts as a platform for systemic change within South Africa. As one member noted, “What emerges from BABA YAYA is a form that transcends the term Dance. BABA YAYA harnesses a form that uses movement as a medium to express what cannot be put into words. BABA YAYA breaks the rules of dancing-for-dance-sake and evokes a sense of presence and honesty.”
