“Pozzo: I don’t seem to be able… (long hesitation) to depart” - Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot
Pieces is a futuristic absurd comedy that explores existence in all its complexity. “The play started as an exploration of the gaze - how it relates to us as black womxn: alienation, inclusion and trying to fit in whilst trying to find an individual voice - the tension of disrupting an already established space."
When reflecting on winning the Emerging Theatre Directors Bursary, Mangcu says, “I had seen the impact (this accolade) made for my peers. It means that I can explore, as a theatre maker my areas of interest, limitlessly. I am most looking forward to deepening the skills I have learnt about theatre making and directing. I also look forward to new collaborations and creating new work whilst continuing the conversation and exploring various topics on intersectional feminism in an embodied way.”
In 2016 Thando co-wrote and co-curated The Fall, a play about the 2015 #RhodesMustFall student movements at UCT. It won the Encore Award at the 2016 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards and performed locally and abroad.
