Reparation had a short run at Theatre Arts in November 2016. It featured at the National Arts Festival, Makhanda in 2017 on the Arena Programme.

Directors Note:

Reparation interrogates two key questions prevalent in the contemporary South African context; “what debt is owed?” and “how is that debt repaid?” It brings to light the issue of white settlers in South Africa and their role in the degradation of black South African society – through the taking of land, the economic power that white people in RSA have, and through the killing of black South Africans during both the colonial and Apartheid eras – and how the power dynamics can be shifted through the dismantling of oppressive symbols. It prophesises the potential outcome of this power shift, and what extreme measures some are willing to do to gain and maintain power, using “justice” as a shield. It also looks at the role that young people and social media have in social justice movements, and how popular culture can be used as a post-modern propaganda tool.
