Theatre is a vibrant and essential part of South Africa’s cultural landscape, yet one of the most significant gaps in the industry is critical engagement and arts journalism. While theatre continues to produce innovative, challenging, and socially resonant work, there remains a shortage of skilled reviewers and commentators capable of interrogating productions with insight, rigor, and context. Opportunities for writers to share their reviews in accessible and influential platforms are extremely limited, which restricts the visibility of productions and undermines the development of a robust culture of critical discourse. The proposed Developing Writers for Writing on Theatre Programme addresses this need by providing intensive, guided training to emerging writers, nurturing their capacity to engage critically with theatre, and connecting them to the broader professional arts ecosystem.
With thanks to the National Arts Council, Theatre Arts is able to run a two-month intensive mentorship programme for four writers, selected for their passion, engagement, and commitment: Zinobulali Goduka, Chester Miggels, Sange Mpambani and Oskar Keogh.
