The Reading Room - Young, Gifted and Written onto Stage

Curated by Faye KABALI-KAGWA | Directed by Ketsia VELPAHI

Young, Gifted, and Written Onto Stage will offer a selection of South African playtexts with child protagonists and written for a youth audience. Whilst still quite a niche market, the three plays that will be explored are set in three different contexts. Mbuzeni revolves around four orphans who are obsessed with death and spend hours recreating funerals in the local graveyard. A Girl Called Owl is set in the Overberg and is a story about a girl who doesn’t quite fit in, sits on the outside and watches the world go by until a new girl arrives.

This playreading hopes to invite young people into the theatre to have a frank intergenerational conversation around the stories we stage and how youth experiences are reflected in South Africa.
