Theatre Arts is putting out a call for the creation of 5 new live theatre performances (dance included) that radically embrace the Age of Corona and the challenge that it is asking theatre makers to face creatively. Please note, this is not an application for work to be live-streamed, but for a live performance that takes at its heart the idea that artists and audience need to remain two metres apart at the very least. These works will be presented in the Theatre Arts open-ended season Two Metres Apart and should experiment and explore what a live theatrical experience can be in this new world.
This application rebels against the current notion that theatre needs to take to the screen. What this application is asking is to radically rethink what theatre can be and the experience that it can offer an audience member whilst retaining the strictest health safety for artists and audience – both in a creative process as well as performance. Never more have we been asked to experiment. The process will involve an initial short-list of 8 applications. These 8 applicants will engage through a forum of conversation and dialogue around the questions that are being asked of us about what theatre can be, creating a community of theatre makers that can help us forge a way forward for a theatre appropriate for its time. A period of two weeks will be given to develop ideas and concepts and from this, 5 applicants will be selected. Each will receive a budget of R15 000 to bring the work into production for performance.
Whilst we do not know when the theatre will be open for performance, the process and development of the work will begin during the different phases of our lockdown. Please note - This call for application is not dictating content. The work does not need to address Covid19 or the lockdown or our experience of now.
To apply, please submit a 2-page creative and conceptual proposal to firstname.lastname@example.org by the 8 th July. Any questions or queries can be addressed to Caroline at the above email address.
